The Hudaibiyah treaty is an example of how the leadership and administration of the Prophet,
peace be upon him, are consistent with the requirements of Maqasid Shariah. The Prophet,
peace be upon him, demonstrated tolerance and diplomacy by agreeing to the requests of the
people of Quraysh which on the surface seem to benefit the enemy and put the Muslims in a
disadvantage position. The Prophet, peace be upon him, among other things, agreed to have
his name written simply as ‘Muhammad ibn ‘Abdillāh’ (Muhammad the son of Abdullah)
instead of ‘Muhammad Rasulullah’ (Muhammad the Messenger of Allah). He also agreed
to the condition that if anyone from the Quraysh people comes to him, he shall be returned
to Makkah although he or she has embraced the religion of Islam. Although this condition
seems, from a short-sighted perspective, disadvantageous for Islam and the Muslims, due to
the Prophet’s wisdom in administration, it eventually led to great victory.

iii. The Perfection and Universality of Islam

The values reflected in Maqasid Shariah is consistent with the nature of human beings who
seek that which is good and avoid that which is harmful. The elements of Maqasid Shariah,
namely seeking that which is good and avoiding that which is harmful will lead to prosperity,
peace and harmony. Practicing the values of Maqasid Shariah in state governance will show
that Islam is indeed the religion of mercy and that it is a universal religion for the entire
                      humanity.
