The figure 8 knot is one of the fundamental knots.
However, despite its bulkier appearance, it does not stop
a rope from running through a hole or slot any better
than a basic overhand. What it does do is untie easier
than an overhand, and so it works well when a stopper
needs to be tied and untied often. An ancient knot,
known since ships first sailed out of sight of shore, its
characteristic figure 8 shape also signifies faithful love in
heraldry, showing up in numerous coats of arms, where it
