tallies into two categories: disruptive behavior during independent work and disruptive behavior during whole
class instruction. We will interpret this data by dividing the total tally of disruptive behaviors by the number
of students in the classroom. For example, if there are 20 students in the classroom and the total tally of
disruptive behaviors is 60, we would interpret this as an average of 3 disruptive behaviors per student every 15
minutes.
In terms of our data collection on disengagement in the classroom, we defined disengagement as the time
during which a student is not focused on the task at hand. An example of this behavior would be a student
sitting at his or her desk not doing classwork, or a student who is walking around the classroom when he
should be listening to the teacher at his seat. Just like our disruptive behavior data collection sheet, our data
collection sheet for disengaging behavior will also include the number of students in the classroom, the time
interval, the date, and the grade. We plan on observing students’ disengaging behavior for a time interval of
15 minutes during whole class instruction. We anticipate that the collection of this data might be difficult for
one person to do on their own, so three of us will be in one class during the collection of disengaging behavior
data. When collecting data on this behavior, we will be writing the name of the student on our paper and
jotting down how long (in seconds) he or she is participating in a disengaging behavior. We also plan on
writing down the specific student behaviors on the bottom of this data collection sheet. We will interpret this
data by dividing the total time of disengaging behaviors (in seconds) by the number of students in the
classroom. For example, if there are 15 students in the classroom and the total time of disengaging behavior is
1800 seconds (or 30 minutes), we would interpret this as an average of 120 seconds (or 2 minutes) of
disengaging behavior per student every 15 minutes.
Regarding our data collection on aggressive/unkind behavior, we defined this as a behavior that aims to hurt
or hurts another student emotionally or physically. Examples of this kind of behavior could include hitting,
kicking, punching, insulting, laughing at others, etc. As aforementioned, this data collection sheet will also
include the number of students in the classroom, the time interval, the date, and the grade. Our time interval
for this behavior will be over the course of 30 minutes. We increased the time interval for this behavior
