or rebuild a house, which she has done. She has helped to remodel many of our
houses; she’s hung drapes, laid floors, and helped build a shed. Name it, she can do
it – or find a way to get it done. Being a former school teacher aids in her
achievements; her motto is, “I am going to do it again and again until I get it right.”
One of my favorite projects that Sue has done is our memory albums. She has
assembled many of our family photos and keepsakes into memory books
portraying our family’s major events such as special holiday, birthday and
anniversary gatherings. These are skillfully woven together with photographs
covering our lives through 2004. What strikes me most about our 50 anniversary
th
book is how breathtakingly beautiful Sue was as a young woman. It has been fifty-
eight years since we first met at college, but I can feel my heart in my throat again
when I scan that book. Our love allows us to look beyond what age imposes; it is
now based on the shared experiences of a lifetime together and the knowledge of
each other that is almost absolute.
Sue also has a lot of natural artistic talent that she has never fully had the time to
explore. She can draw portraits, landscapes or whatever. She can do any kind of
signage. She creatively makes signs for the church on poster board. Her lettering is
great – always proportional and attractive. Just put something in front of her, and
she can draw it or write it. She has a natural talent and innate ability for art, which
she, unfortunately, has never really cultivated.
As for her cooking, Sue is an excellent cook. Food and nutrition are of utmost
importance to her. You will never go hungry at our house, and no food is ever
thrown away. She is known for her fried chicken that she has prepared for many
friends everywhere we’ve lived. To our friends in Hong Kong, where the Chinese
probably have ten different ways of preparing chicken, Sue is known by many to
be the “Queen of Chicken.” In fact, KFC went to Hong Kong and failed and had to
leave the island, so this is really a compliment to Sue.
Sue is a very religious and highly spiritual person. Her overall life is guided by her
full acceptance of God and her uncompromising commitment to Him. She is a very
strong Christian. Therefore, her life has been filled with church-related activities.
You can often find her at church doing everything from arts and crafts to
landscaping to chairing the Samaritan’s Purse Shoe Box Ministry, Franklin
Graham’s program that provides clothing, toys, school supplies, and a Gospel
