Page 74 - Barbara Merry - The Splicing Handbook
P. 74
Before executing this splice, reeve the line around the drum and through all the
relevant hardware. Assuming you’re leading the line back to the cockpit, you’ll
need the length of the endless loop to be twice the distance from drum to
cockpit, plus the extra needed for the drum, the cockpit belay, and any
intervening directional changes.
If the rope ends have been heat-sealed, cut off the sealed ends, then tape them
to keep them from unlaying. Lay the ends out and mark the rope at two places
toward each end: Mark A should be one full fid length from the ends; Mark B
should be half a full fid length from Mark A.
Put a good, tight, permanent whipping right behind each of the two B marks.
Now, just in front of the two B marks, separate the coat strands to expose the
core. Pry them out completely and cut off the core tails flush at the coat.
Using the fid, marry the two taped ends by interlacing one into the other at the
midpoint A marks. The taped ends exit the coat at the B marks. Thoroughly milk
out all the slack.
