Pinch the taped end of the core and insert it into the hollow end of the fid; tape
it in place. Push the fid into the coat at the R and out at the X. You should now
have the core exiting twice at the X. Pull the core through until the single hash
mark lines up with the R, then hold it firmly in position while you smooth the
coat from the R to the X. Mark the tail core where it exits at the X with a band
around the core.
Insert the fid (with the core end still taped to it) into the core at the two hash
marks, run it through the core, and pull it out at the three hash marks—in effect,
pulling the core through itself. Pull until the band lines up with the two hash
marks.
To taper the tail that exits at the three hash marks, fan it. Then measure from
its working end one-third of a full fid length, making a mark at that point. Cut at
an angle from the opposite bottom corner to the place marked.
The distance between I and II is one short fid length. The distance between II
and III is three full fid lengths plus one short fid length.
Hold the rope where the band on the core and the two hash marks meet, and
smooth the core toward the loose tail. The tail should slip into the core if your
measurements were correct.
