Whipping twine
Thimble (optional)
Swedish fid
Tie a slip knot about 5 feet (1.5 m) from the end of the rope to prevent the coat
from creeping up the core more than necessary. If the end of the rope has been
heat-sealed, cut it off and tape the new end to prevent unlaying.
Mark the coat 9 inches (230 mm) from the end to make room in the working
end for the splice. Form the rope into an eye and mark the coat again. (Allow an
extra ½inch/12 mm if you are using a thimble.)
Push aside the threads of the coat at your second mark until the hole is large
enough to expose the core. Extract the core by hooking it with a Swedish fid.
Cut 3 inches (75 mm) off the core’s end.
Form the eye to the proper size, this time on the core, and cut off one of the
core’s three twisted strands at the throat of the splice.
Move toward the working end an inch (25 mm) or so, and remove half the
thickness of another strand; tape. Continue tapering and taping until the end of
the core is small enough to go through the eye of the splicing tool.
