Now the working end of the coat must be pulled through the standing part of
the rope. To make it easier to do this, begin a pathway by inserting the empty
tool at the throat and pushing it out about 3 inches (75 mm) up the standing part
of the rope; wiggle it.
Reverse the tool, entering the rope about 3 inches (75 mm) below the throat
and exiting at the throat. Lace the eye with some of the shortest pieces of coat
tail and pull them through. Repeat at various points around the circumference,
below the throat. Pull the longer tail pieces through farther from the throat.
If you are using a thimble, insert it now. To take the slack out of the splice,
hook the eye over a strong hook or knob, hold the core and cover tails, and pull
firmly until the coat and core are snug.
Cut off the tails close to their exit points and firmly smooth the entire coat
over the core from the slip knot to the throat. The clipped ends should slip into
the rope.
Lock-stitch with needle and thread (see page 46).
