To ease the coat away from the core and make the splice easier to complete,
draw out additional core from the standing part of the rope. Extract about 3
inches (75 mm) for 5/16- and ⅜-inch (8 and 9 mm) rope, and 4 inches (100 mm)
for 7/16-and ½-inch (11 and 12 mm) rope.
Begin at the slip knot to reposition the coat by milking it firmly while sliding
your hand toward the spot where the coat and core separate. This action loosens
the core and coat, and makes them easier to work with. Work in short,
overlapping sections and do not pull on the coat.
Insert the eye of the Marlow splicing tool (see page 13) into the coat where it
opens for the core. Push it through the coat to exit at the throat.
