Thread the core through the eye of the splicing tool and draw it back through
the coat to exit with the tool at the coat opening.
You will now gradually work all of the core ends farther down the standing
part of the rope. Untape the ends, unlay the tail, comb out the strands with your
fingers, and divide the yarns into three groups. Tape the ends of the new
groupings.
Insert the eye of the splicing tool 12 inches (300 mm) below the mark for the
throat and exit at the original coat opening. Thread one-third of the tail, located
there, into the eye. Pull it through the coat and draw it out.
Repeat with the remaining two sections of core tail, bringing one out 10
inches (250 mm) and the other out 8 inches (200 mm) below the throat, pulling
each time. Remove the tape from all three sections.
Pull until the union is firm and the throat closes.
Taper the coat by removing one strand at 3 inches (75 mm) from the end, two
strands at 2 inches (50 mm), and four strands at 1 inch (25 mm).
