Place a fresh piece of tape on the rope end where the eye is to be spliced to
keep the rope from unlaying.
Tie a slip knot 12 full fid lengths from the working end to retain the one-to-
one relationship between the core and coat.
Wrap a layer of tape around the rope one full fid length from the working end.
(Fid sections are marked on the shipping tube for the tool.) Label this reference
point with an R.
Add the amount of rope necessary to form the eye, and mark this spot with an
X.
Continuing toward the slip knot, measure 1½ full fid lengths. (Note that one-
half of a full fid length is not the same as a short fid length.) Mark this point with
a Y.
Return to the X and gently pull aside the strands of the coat to expose its inner
core. Pull out a small loop using the Uni-Fid. Draw a single hash mark across the
top of the core.
Pull out the working-end core completely, taper the end by cutting it at an
angle, and tape. This will ease snaking of the core through the coat in a
succeeding step.
Now pull out more core, this time from the standing part of the rope, and
measure one short fid length from the hash mark. Place two hash marks there.
For a soft eye: Place a layer of tape on the standing side of this spot so it just
touches the double hash mark.
For a hard eye: Measure from the two hash marks toward the working end of
the core, the distance between the R and the X (rope set aside for the eye). Place
