Tightly tape the tapered coat tail with masking tape; use as little tape as
possible, but be sure to get all the loose ends. Smooth the coat from the slip knot
down toward the eye; the core should slide back into the coat.
Attach the slip knot to a mounted hook, or have an assistant hold it. Smooth
the coat over the core and coat-to-core joint. Begin gently, but if bunching occurs
at the throat, roll and flex the area. If the coat does not move into position, use
more muscle power and less finesse. You may have to pound on the rope with a
wooden mallet to redistribute the strands.
Lock-stitch the splice into place (see page 46).
