Hollow Braid
Splices in hollow braid work on the same principle as the Chinese finger puzzle.
After the working end is passed through the braid of the standing part and into
the hollow of the rope, and the fid (see below) is removed, the strands of the
braid return to their factory form. In doing so, they constrict, gripping the length
of the rope tightly.
A special splicing tool, or fid, is made for this rope, but these fids are hard to
find, so I recommend an alternative—a knitting needle with its end cap removed,
or even a length of wire coat hanger. Either can be taped tightly to the rope while
you work.
