Splicing tool (see chapter introduction)
Scissors or sharp knife
Lay out your rope and form the necessary eye. For rope of ¼ to ½inch (6 to 12
mm) in diameter, allow about 10 inches (250 mm) for the tail. Taper the end of
the rope by cutting the tip off at a 45-degree angle.
Push the tapered end into the hollow of the fid or affix it tightly to the splicing
tool, as described for the previous splice.
Wrap the working end of the rope around the standing part to make a Half
Hitch as shown in the drawing, and adjust the hitch until the eye is the desired
size.
Insert the tip of the splicing tool into the standing part of the rope just above
the hitch and ease the tool approximately 8 inches (200 mm) up through the
standing part’s core before poking back out through the braid. Pull the tool
completely out and draw out the tail until snug.
Smooth the rope and cut the tail off close, tucking the cut strand ends back
into the braid of the standing part until hidden from view.
