Cut off the heat-sealed melted ends on the two ropes if necessary.
Measure back from both ends 14 inches (355 mm) and make a mark on both
ropes at that spot. At your mark, separate the strands of the coat and then pry out
the cores completely, back to the ends.
Now, moving farther up the two standing parts, away from the cut ends, make
a second set of marks on the coats, another 14 inches (355 mm) beyond the first
set.
Turn and adjust the two ends of the ropes so they face each other.
Insert the splicing tool into one of the ropes at the second mark (i.e., 28
inches/710 mm from the end). Run the tool down the center of the rope and poke
just the tip out where the core exits the rope, at the first mark. Thread about 1½
inches (38 mm) of the end of the other rope’s cover into the tip of the tool, then
drag it back through and out at the second mark.
