Waxed whipping twine
Estimate the amount of rope you will need for the eye and mark either both
right-laid strand pairs or both left-laid strand pairs for about twice this distance.
Starting from the working end, count up the standing part of the rope 10 picks
and seize the rope at that point with tape or twine.
Unlay the rope to the seizing, allowing the twist in the individual strands to
remain. Tape the strand pairs together at their working ends (A).
Form the eye and take a painted pair of strands and tuck them at the throat
under a handy unpainted pair in the standing part (B). A Swedish fid can make
the process easier.
Turn the splice over and slip the other painted pair under the second unpainted
pair (C). Always work so that you are tucking against the lay of the strands in
the standing part. That is, if the standing pair twists from upper right to lower
left, tuck under it from left to right.
