Finally, work the tail back into the standing part so that the eye grows back
into its proper size. As you go, note the unique property that causes this splice to
hold: If you grasp the eye in one hand and hold the standing part of the rope in
the other, the weave of the braid around the spliced section will tighten when
you try to pull the tail back into the core, and the tail will refuse to budge. If you
grasp the eye in one hand while pinching the braid opening in the throat of the
splice with your other thumb and forefinger, you can easily pull the tail back
through the braid until just its knobby end remains visible. Anyone who has ever
played with a Chinese finger puzzle will understand why this works as it does.
LOCKED EYE SPLICE
This is an easy and quick splice to execute. It is a good method to use if
the eye is 3 inches (75 mm) or smaller.
