Highlights of the Parent Club Committee,
September 24, 2018:
Sheila Goffe, VP AKC Government Relations,
reminded delegates that local anti-dog
legislation is becoming a big problem. She has
an excellent power point presentation called
“While We Were Sleeping,” which stresses the
importance of paying attention to legislation in
our communities.
There is also growing concern about imported
rescue dogs bringing diseases into this
country because they are not vetted properly
or legitimately. Dogs with improper health
certificates should not be accepted into the US
and should be returned to country of origin.
There are more AKC Pet Disaster trailers on
order. Currently there are 68 trailers in 28
states. It was pointed out that there needs to
be more publicity for the trailers when they are
deployed. It would give AKC and the sponsoring survey which is designed to provide information
clubs recognition and make the public aware of
this important disaster resource.
The AKC Marketplace continues to be a work
in progress. Parent clubs will now be referred
to as National Breed Clubs. It is believed that
this will make it easier for the public and new
owners to understand what a parent club is.
Breeders will also be better prioritized: Breeder
of Merit, Member of National Breed Club, and
Bred with HEART. It will also offer a detailed
description of breed clubs and there will be
breed articles, starting with 6 trial breeds. (We

misrepresent themselves as parent club
members, etc.
Mari-Beth O’Neill reminded delegates that
state fairs are an excellent way to reach Junior
Showmanship prospects through 4-H programs.
Kennel club representatives should have a list
of kennel clubs in the state.
It is important to reach out to breeders who may
not be parent club members and make them
aware of the club and invite them to join.
There is a Specialty Show Site where clubs
can fill out information about their clubs’ shows.
Unfortunately, this site which was established
in 2004 is virtually unknown and difficult to
access. A new subcommittee has been formed
to get the word out to parent clubs and update
the site. This will likely include an email blast
from Club Development promoting the program
with a follow up email about completing the
about show sites to other specialty clubs.
More information is expected at the December
meeting.

The Forum topic was “Could Your Club Survive
a Claim: Let’s Talk About Club Insurance”
Key points were that even a small claim can be
a problem and create serious financial hardship
for a club. It was recommended that clubs
consult with an insurance representative to
make sure they get the appropriate coverage.
