Protect the district’s network from internet and external dangers

Purpose: The district should create a multi-layer protection system to ensure that unauthorized
access to the network does not occur.

Policy IJ – Technology and Instruction – Electronic Information Resources

The Technology Director will ensure the following:

1. That the district will utilize a multi-layer protection system that includes an anti-virus application,
spam filters and anti-spyware software, and an external firewall to prevent access from unauthorized
sources.

2. That any applications or web pages that will be viewable by the public or by certain users, will be held
in that portion of the network where there is limited trust.

3. That Network resources that are relegated to the “limited trust” will be completely separated from any
internal networks, thereby blocking firewall avoidance.

4. That available and open ports are reviewed periodically.

5. That the district utilizes automatic updates where appropriate for operating systems and common
software applications.

6. That the district will secure the wireless network by using WEP, WPA or other network level
protective encryption to avoid access by unauthorized sources as appropriate.

7. That Network administrators will periodically check systems ability to link IP addresses to users on
the network.
