Loy Krathong
Loy Krathong is Thailand’s ‘Festival of Lights’ and a major tourist attraction. It is
celebrated during a full moon usually in November. Also known as the ‘Festival of
Lights’, ‘Loy Khratong’ means ‘to float a basket’. Decorative baskets are released into
waterways the sea or the sky along with a wish and to make merit.
Chak Phra Festival
The Chak Pra Festival is celebrated annually in Southern Thailand and is deeply rooted
in Buddhism tradition. Its significance is to celebrate Buddha’s symbolic return to earth
at the end of Buddhist lent. It occurs on the first day of the eleventh lunar month which
generally falls in November. ‘Chak Pra’ translates into ‘pulling the Buddha’. On Koh
Samui, the tradition involves pulling a Buddha enshrined on a ceremonial float in the
Chak Pra parade through the street near the Nathon pier.
