TRANSPORTATION
Samui Airport is a private airport built and owned by Bangkok Airways. When the
airport was constructed in 1989, Bangkok Airways was the the main operator and the
only airline providing service to and from Koh Samui and mainland Thailand. The airport
terminal complex has received an Environmental Impact Assessment Award due to its
use of locally produced palm leaves and its natural, open-air cooling system.
Several ferries connect the island with the mainland, including two vehicle & pedestrian
ferries (Raja Ferries and Seatran). These ferry services also connect the mainland port
of Don Sak to piers in the west of the island in Lipa Noi and Nathon. Buses from Nathon
can also get to the mainland via ferry and take passengers to all mainland destination.
Public transportation songthaews (small, open air vehicles with a covered back seating
area) circle the main ‘ring road’ picking up passengers along the route. Their fees are
fixed depending on the destination and they operate only during daylight hours. Private
‘taxi meter’ taxis are also available throughout the island. Fees are determined by the
meter, distance and set service charge.
Hotel transportation can be arranged for destinations on the island. Contact the Front
Desk for more information and arrangements.
Enjoy our chau eur drive services with aircondition vehicles, English speaking
chau eur, WiFi, cold towel, island map and drinking water.

Hainan Temple (Chinese) Camry Ventury (Van)
This brightly colored gem of a temple built in 1862 is in the center of Nathon. As
you walk down Thaweerat Phakdee Street (Route 4169), look for Soi Angthong 4.
You can see the temple compound from the main road. On closer inspection,
you'll see the two fierce looking golden lions guarding the main gate. The main
building is surrounded by a walled garden; go inside and experience the peace
and tranquility as tra c noise is virtually non-existent inside the walls.
Wat Khunaram - Mummified Monk
Born in the late 1800's, Loung Pordaeng, the most famous of Koh Samui monks was a
well respected member of the local community when he entered the monastery in his
early twenties. After 2 years of study, he left Wat Samret temple to marry a local girl
and start a family. Once his 6 children had reached adulthood, Loung Pordaeng
ventured back to Buddhist studies, becoming a monk in 1944. His passion in life was
Buddhism and he became one of the leading monks on Koh Samui.
In 1973, Loung Pordaeng passed away as he predicted while sitting peacefully in
meditation. Before his death, he requested that his students cremate his body should
his remains decay. If his remains were preserved, then he wished them to be placed on
display at the temple to inspire monks to study the teachings of the Buddhist
scriptures.
