Introduction
English is the language of international communication, so there is almost
no country that does not study it as a language of communication for students or
businessmen. In Indonesia, English is highly appreciated in all educational
institutions, including Islamic boarding schools (Izzan, 2010). According to Pandit
Nehru "English is a big key in the modern world." English is important as an
international language that cannot be denied by anyone. International English is the
concept of English as a means of global communication in many dialects, and also
a movement towards an international standard for the language (Petel and Jain,
2008: 6) In the era of globalization, scientific and technological progress is growing.
Therefore, English is very important to be mastered so as not to be left behind in
the progress of science and technology. By following developments and applying
technology in education, it will be very helpful in improving the quality and
learning process. In the past, learning was only a transfer of knowledge from
teachers to students, but now students can seek and explore their own knowledge
such as by searching for learning materials on the internet, there are many sites that
provide learning materials, and teachers in schools only act as facilitators.
Twenty years ago, in Indonesia English was not yet a subject in elementary
schools, but now English has begun to be applied in elementary schools, even at the
kindergarten level. In elementary schools, English subjects are included in local
content subjects. The 2006 policy related to local content subjects was Ministerial
Regulation No. 22 of 2006 dated May 23, 2006. Local content is a curricular activity
to develop competencies that are tailored to the characteristics and potential of the
region, including regional advantages whose material cannot be grouped into two
categories of existing subjects. In addition, the substance of local content is
determined by the education unit and these local content subjects are allocated two
hours, meaning 2 x 35 minutes. In addition to the national policies as mentioned
above, there are also regional and institutional policies. This kind of policy is
usually taken by the principal or school principal after meeting with the teacher
staff or school committee. Local content subjects such as English in SD/MI are the
authority of the school to determine whether English subjects need to be given at
the school, if needed, starting in what grade, and how many hours a week. When a
decision has been made, careful preparation is needed, which is related to the
teaching staff and teaching materials. already implemented in elementary schools
(Suyanto, 2010: 5).
Based on the above, this module is structured to be able to provide the basic
procedures for learning English in elementary schools that are interesting and fun.
In addition, this module is also equipped with examples of learning plans for low-
grade and high-grade English subjects.
