SAFETY AND SECURITY ISSUES
3.1 INTRODUCTION FIG 3.2
Increase in the number of vehicles and lower ROAD ACCIDENTS VICTIMS
road density are the key factors responsible for (OTHER THAN DRIVERS) BY AGE GROUP[1]
increase in number of road accidents every year 0-14 AGE GROUP - 5,937 (4.1)
in India. India has maximum road fatalities in the
world, which are continuously increasing year on
year. Figure 3.1 shows that road fatalities in India
increased from 1.32 Lakh in 2010 to 1.37 Lakh in 14-25 AGE GROUP
2013. 48,420 (33.1)
The Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR)
of number of road accidents and persons injured
in road accident in the country during the decade
1994-2003 and 2004-2013 has decreased from 25-35 AGE GROUP
1.0% to 0.6% and from 1.5% to 0.3% respectively. 30,656 (21.0)
This was particularly severe because 53.1% of road
accident victims were in the age group of 25 to
65 years in 2013, with pedestrians, bicyclists and
2/3-wheelers, comprising the most unprotected 35-45 AGE GROUP
road users, accounting for ~40% of the fatalities 26,046 (17.8)
(Figure 3.2).
According to the Times of India dated 8 Oct,
th
2012, with 1% of total global vehicle population 45-65 AGE GROUP
in the country, India accounts for 10% of vehicular 26,784 (18.3)
accidental deaths. Every 6 road accident in the
th
world takes place in India. According to a recent 65+ AGE GROUP - 4,380 (3.0)
WHO report, one person is killed every 3.7
minutes in a road accident in India and one accident UNKNOWN AGE GROUP - 3,910 (2.7)
takes places every minute. Figure 3.3 shows fatalities FIGURES IN PARANTHESIS: PERCENTAGE OF
due to accidents involving various types of vehicles. PERSONS KILLED IN TOTAL ROAD ACCIDENTS
