Figure 3.6 shows the number of accidents per FIG 3.8
lakh population increased from 21.2 in 1970 CAUSES OF ROAD ACCIDENTS IN INDIA [1]
to 22.8 in 1980, followed by a sharp increase
to 33.8 in 1990. Between 2000 and 2005, it
fluctuated in the range of 38.6 to 40.1, moving FAULT OF DRIVERS
above 42.0 during 2007 and 2008, a slight dip ----------------------
to 41.9 in 2009, again rose to 42.5 in 2010 and 77.1%
declining to 41.1 in 2011 and further declining
to 39.9 in 2012 and 38.9 in 2013 respectively
which is slightly risen to 40.0 in 2015.
Figure 3.7 shows the trend in the number FAULT OF CYCLISTS -----
of accidents per lakh kilometers of the road ------ 0.7%
length shows that the number of accidents have FAULT OF PEDESTRIAN ----- ------ 1.5%
increased over the last few decades, from 960 in

1970 to 1,027 in 1980, peaked to 1,425 in 1990, DEFECT IN CONDITION ------ 2.3%
OF MOTOR VEHICLE
but declined thereafter, fluctuating within a band
of 1,202 to 1,179 per ten thousand kilometers DEFECT IN

of roads during 2001 to 2008. Then dipped ROAD CONDITION ------ 1.5%
slightly to 1,088 during 2009 and again rose to WEATHER CONDITION -----
1,090 during 2010 and declined to 1,061 and ------ 1.2%
1,008 during 2011 and 2012 respectively [1].
