            Chapter 7 Network and E-mail

            Setting Up Remote Access

                Glossary of Networking Terminology
Cat-5 Category Five Cable. The cabling used to connect networked components together. The
connectors look very similar to a phone connector, but wider since it contains more wires.
ISP Internet Service Provider. The company contracted to provide a connection to the internet.
LAN Local Area Network. A private network of computers and devices at a location.
WAN Wide Area Network. An external network of computers. For example, the Internet.
IP Address The unique numeric label applied to devices on a network. Think of it as a street address.
Subnet Subnetwork. A means to divide up all possible IP addresses into more manageable blocks of
addresses. This involves the division of a computer network into groups of computers that have
the identical common component of their IP address designated as their routing prefix.
Gateway A network device used to communicate with IP addresses on a different subnet.
Switch A network device used to process and route data on the same network.
Packet A formatted unit of data carried across a network.
NAT Network Address Translation. The process of modifying packet information to redirect it to a
                           different IP address.
            Port A synonym for NAT.
            Forwarding
            Pinhole A synonym for NAT.
DHCP Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. A protocol used to assign an IP address, subnet, and
gateway to a network device dynamically.
Static IP As opposed to a dynamic IP address and subnet assigned by DHCP, a statically assigned IP
address and subnet is not subject to change.
Router A network device used to bridge two networks. Most routers available combine the
functionality of a switch, gateway, DHCP, and NAT.

                Necessary Connections
The diagram below shows the connections needed for Remote Access, both at the car wash site and
            at the remote access site.
