The
It Is Good
To Be Good
NUR HANANI BINTI HANIS
When I was a kid, my mother used to tell me
that courtesy shows politeness, it costs
nothing but pays well and no one is too big
or busy to practise courtesy. I do not really
understand the meaning behind the phrase
“no one is too big or busy to practise
courtesy”. At that very young age, with a
naïve thought of mine, I never speculate that
one will not be having good manners as we
do not require any specific training to be
polite and act kindly to others.
A simple gesture such as a warm smile or
acknowledgement like “thank you” or “I am
sorry” can really make someone's life
brighter. As I am getting older, I can see that
courtesy is slowly fading among society. It
scares me to realise that nowadays, society
lives in an era whereby acting rude is a norm
and being polite and respectful is a symbol
of weakness. Television, movies, the media
and merchandisers often portray rudeness
and aggressiveness as being “in.” Not
wanting to be left out and wishing to be
“cool,” the young blindly follow the examples
espoused by their heroes and heroines. The
common question is, where has courtesy
gone in our society?
