1958 “The Derby was and always has been a racing
event. Even today. It was first held at the greyhound
racing track in Hamburg-Farmsen. Then the
Hamburg club moved to Hamburg Eppendorf to
build a larger and more beautiful racetrack. There
is the German Derby and the International Derby,
held over a weekend in August. Only dogs from
German breeding and three-year-olds are admitted
to the German Derby, I believe in the same way as
        the horse derby.
Such metal badges used to be attached to a leather
strap about 5 cm wide and the dogs were walked
with them. It was called "strunzleine" from the word
"strunzen" = to brag. I once owned two, a wonderful
gift from an old Whippet breeder (Patricia Lauer).”

The 70th anniversary in 1962 was celebrated in style with a two-day program of festivities.
However, the number of races declined steadily: from 52 in 1957 to 32 in 1961. It was not
until 1971 that this trend was reversed. In 1975, there were 54 races again. There were
then 26 racing clubs active. Many technical improvements were made: endless hare
systems, irrigation facilities, improvement of the running surface. Following the English

example, the call for sand tracks became increasingly clear.
