can recall several examples of top
winning males who exuded quality
and charisma and achieved mighty
winning records in the show ring by
virtue of their class and refinement,
yet when it came to producing they
were something of a disappointment.
However in some cases they had
litter brothers who were not shown
as successfully, that were a little
“thuggier” and bordering on being
overdone, who turned out to be far
better stud dogs.
“Pretty” males do not often make
great stud dogs, regardless of the
breed, though as with everything
there have been exceptions.

When economics dictate that Best in Show and Best Baby Puppy in Show
breeders cannot afford to run on
puppies indefinitely, it does occur to
me that sometimes males get passed on in haste, only to see their breeders subsequently regret “the
one that got away”.
