Health Street: Nutrition
Investing in Your Health
By: Konke Mzila
Our nutrition, being one of the greatest impactors to our general health, is something that we
could all consciously make the decision to invest in – irrespective of age, weight, financial
background or any other factors that have been mythically and falsely associated with health.
It is often said: “we are what we consume”. This popular saying, which can be applied in all
spheres of our lives, has unfortunately been neglected when it comes to our nutrition. We
have lost the understanding and reality, of basic nutrition along with its importance. The
saying basically means that we are a literal reflection of what we eat – from the inside out.
Our overall health can easily be determined by this minor – yet so great a decision of
investing in our health.
Investing in your health is a short-term decision that has a long-term effect. Opting to be
healthy may not always be the most practically convenient route, but it can determine
whether or not you become more prone to illnesses or inherit certain diseases. Ones eating is
of a habitual routine (that solely depends on their mindset), which becomes a lifestyle and
therefore determines our entire being.
With this being said, the sooner one takes their own health into their hands – the better. No
one is ever too young to take-over and control their own health. Likewise, one’s physical
appearance shouldn’t be the only determinant to keep healthy; as this would imply that
people who are comfortable with their weight or physical appearance should neglect their
health. Lastly, and certainly not least: considering our finances. Myth has it, eating healthy is
expensive – there is no such; if anything, it is actually the complete opposite. Good nutrition
is simply about the right decisions; making the effort to ensure that you’ve opted for the
healthier option available at that moment; discipline and understanding that you’re either
eating to enrich or damage your body.
