STORY
ABOVE The end of February marks the
start of the European lynx mating season
(it ends in mid-April) so lynx are scent
marking more frequently to communicate
with potential mates. Here a female
called B218 is passing a spot to mark
her territory during snowfall in the Jura
Mountains, Switzerland. Females reach
reproductive maturity at 20 to 24 months.
LEFT A male named B416 sniffs a
rock, rubs his face and sprays the
area with urine to delimit his territory.
Now the the Jura Mountains is well
populated, lynx (especially males) may
begin to find other territories in the
Vosges Mountains, eastern France, the
Chartreuse Mountains in the French
Alps and the Black Forest in Germany.
