UAE and Governing Laws
The United Arab Emirates is the constitutional federation consisting of seven emirates namely: Abu Dhabi, Dubai,
Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al-Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Al Fujairah. Abu Dhabi is the capital of UAE and is the
second largest city in the country.
UAE is a country with almost year-round sunshine, little rainfall and near perfect winter temperatures. Arabic is the
official language used in the country, but English is widely spoken as well. Signs and Road shops are written in both
languages Arabic and English.
The UAE Constitution provides freedom of religion in accordance with established customs. Abu Dhabi is tolerant of
other religions with people being free to practice their religious beliefs, so long as they do not interfere with Islam.
UAE is an attractive market in the world for investment. Main Industry drivers of UAE Economy are Petroleum,
natural gas and oil. Employment is governed by the UAE labour law. However, there are some areas in the country,
which practice different labour laws. Labour law applies to all staff and employees working in UAE, whether UAE
Nationals or Expatriates.
The legal framework of the Emirates is more of a dual acting system, comprising mainly Islamic aspects of
conventional law. However, the laws in the UAE are more liberal, in comparison to the other Arab Nations. The
regulations of the UAE are constantly being developed and adapted to meet the fast pace of developments happening
within the Country.
Here are some general rules and guidelines applicable to Expats residing in U.A.E., regardless of the emirates of
residence.
