The dress code in UAE reflects the Islamic Traditions of the country, which indicates more conservative clothing
than most western nations. In general most 'normal' clothing is tolerated, provided, it is not too outrageous. To be
respectful of the UAE culture, it is best to remain covered from shoulder at least to the knees. For instance, although
t-shirts (preferably with sleeves covering at least upper arm) are fine, spaghetti tops for women may not be
appreciated in public areas. Also, very tight and/or low-cut t-shirts are also considered offensive.
Public decency and Morality laws are well observed throughout the country. Any public display of affection or
immodesty may be subject to imprisonment.
Unmarried couples are not permitted to live together or share an apartment in UAE.
Islam is the main religion throughout the UAE. Expatriates follow their own religions and that is tolerated. But,
anything that is anti-Islam will not be tolerated at any level and may result in fines and imprisonment. During the
month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, and hence eating, smoking or drinking in public places
during this month may not be acceptable.
