Chapter 6 The 10 PREVENTABLE Killer Diseases
Obesity And Respiratory Diseases
The International Journal of General Medicine says: “The obesity epidemic is global, which is set to increase.
Obesity plays a key role in the development of obstructive Sleep Apnea and obesity hypoventilation
syndrome. Asthma is more common and often harder to treat in the obese population.
Weight gain and rising BMI are associated with decreases in lung volumes.
Excess weight, due to obesity, on the anterior chest wall, lowers chest wall respiratory muscle endurance with
the increase in work required for obese people in breathing due to airway restriction and resistance.
Two recent studies have demonstrated that changes in lung volume can occur at early stages of obesity and
are not limited to the morbidly obese individuals.
Obesity presents various respiratory problems and is associated with many medical comorbidities.
Despite the evidence demonstrating additional health risks and reduced quality of life, the rate of obesity is
still increasing globally. Practical challenges exist in caring for obese patients. We highlight complications
faced by patients undergoing surgical procedures, especially given the increased use of bariatric surgery.”
