3.6 Rukubji Duepung Zilnoenling Elementary School
Rukubji Duepung
Zilnoenling Elementary
School is the abode of
guardian deity Drakma
Pelzang. The people of
Rukubji, Bumlo and Ribana
used to conduct the deity
festival (Lucho) once in
every three years to
propitiate the deity. There
was no temple or image of
the deity and a cypress tree
was believed to be his abode
where people come and
propitiate the deity.
Later in the 1970s, during the construction of the motorable highway, the abode of the
guardian deity happened to be below the road. This had angered the deity thereby
spreading diseases and misfortunes among the people and cattle of the locality. All
manner of divinations said that these were caused by the guardian deity. Therefore, in
around 1996, the community people got together and built a small shrine with the image
of the deity near the present monastery.
Later, great Buddhist masters such as Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and the 69th Je Khenpo
Ngawang Thinley Lhundup prophesied that building an abode for the guardian deity
would bring good fortune to the entire country.
