"Beautiful young people are accidents of nature but beautiful old people are works of art "
-ELEANOUR ROOSEVELT
The wisdom and experience of older people are inestimable. Recognising and reassuring the
contributions of older people is essential to the long term flourishing of any society. The
profound idea (Age friendly concept) of MAGICS NGO, VPS Lakeshore Hospital and
Ernakulam Dist. together brings a shift and new element to the accustomed lives of
the elderly people. The ingenious idea added flavour and colour to their lethargic life .
To make head way into the concept ,the programme started with organising of three
consecutive leisure tours :
‘
a) Boating at Marine Drive and a visit to Lulu Mall
b) Boating at Marine Drive and Diwali Celebrations at Cherayi
beach.
c) Campus visit as a part of implementing First age friendly college in
the nation.
Hard work and determination made the ardent dream of the pillars behind this
huge concept come true. The programme commenced in SH college ,Thevara and
a declaration of the action plan of academic year 2016- 2017 was made on 2nd
March 2016.The programme is still carrying on and advancing
successfully with the support of college authorities and students.
Launch of this concept , made a huge impact in the society which
paved way for many educational institutions to think out of the box
adopt age friendly programme in their institutions.
TOUR -1
BOATING AT MARINE DRIVE AND VISIT TO LULU MALL.
A group of 50 elderly people gathered at Marine Drive on .... with a
new ray of hope and interest from their usual daily routine lives.
Inauguration of the tour was by K.Babu former honourable minister of
fisheries, ports and excise Gov of Kerala.
The group was further divided into two, where one group headed for Boating
and other went to Lulu Mall.
BOATING
All set for the trip out on the boat, the aged cheered and laughed with glittering eyes for a
memorable journey through the serene backwaters
of Vembanad Lake. Though Marine Drive is a popular
hangout place for the youth, it was a surprising sight
for many of the people and the so called 'youth’. They
sang, danced ,cheered , applauded throughout the
journey. The positive spirit of them showed how much
they were exhausted from their habitual routines.
Their tears of joy and happiness were itself a sign of
fruitful step towards a great project.
