“Because I was not taught, your mom was not taught, your sister was not taught, and you
aren’t being taught about the many inventions Black people have provided this country. While I
am happy we’re learning these things now, I feel sad and angry that we didn’t know before.”
Jaxon is not sure what to think about his dad’s reaction.
His dad continues, “It’s cool you can talk to people about their inventions. And meeting them
is even more amazing. It’s really exciting for me, that’s for sure.”
All of a sudden, Jaxon’s dad looks like he’s remembering something.
“You know, it just dawned on me. After I spoke with you, I didn’t see any Black people in my

office or on my way home. That was the other thing that was really strange to me. It makes sense
               now.”
Wait, not just Black people’s inventions are missing, but Black people too. Jaxon’s stomach
               feels sick.
“Jaxon, come with me to the study. I have a book I’d like you to see.”
Jaxon decides to think about the scary thought later. He will have to be very careful with his
               last wish.

His dad turns to thank Mr. Downing for providing his information, but Mr. Downing is gone.
He flashes a questioning look at Jaxon. Jaxon puts his hand on his dad’s back and says, “Don’t
worry, you’ll get used to it. Huh, Mom?”
She looks at Jaxon’s dad amused, “Yes, Joe, we are part of his extraordinary day, too.”
