At the same time, not only for the Initiate, but also for the attentive researcher and scholar, it
will be possible to understand that the initiatory deposit is actually much older than 1099,
although it also incorporates elements that can be placed at that time.
In relation to these particular elements and according to our oral tradition, we wanted to place
the Order's birth date in 1099, on the occasion of the foundation by the Duke of Merovingian
descent, Godfrey of Bouillon, at the abbey "Our Lady" of Mount Sion ", as" Order of Our
Lady of Mount Sion ", because on this occasion, this Merovingian initiatory Order has also
taken on the knightly connotation.
IN: Focusing on the historical origins of the Priory of Sion, and sticking to the narrower sense
of the latter, many of those interested in the history of this Order can not explain the
relationship between a monastic Order, which monks were then transferred to France , and
the correlation with a chivalric order, especially considered, that the monks transferred from
the Holy Land, were assigned to the Priory of Saint-Samson in Orléans (former abbey of
Saint-Symphorien) and not to a Priory of Sion in France, there can explain where exactly is
then the relationship?
GM: I realize that without a specific preparation regarding the Orders of chivalry and their
history, it is difficult to know or imagine the relationship between a Knight Order and a
monastic Order, which in fact, in most cases, is not done exception for this specific and a few
others, who were established as religious-chivalrous or religious-military Orders such as the
Templars, and were created at the time of the Crusades and the party was required to vote in
war jointly with those characteristic of the monastic tradition, or poverty, chastity and
obedience. In this particular, these orders differed drastically from any other religious order of
Christian origin, as they did not observe the prohibition that prevented the knights from
taking sacred vows, and then from a monk to shed the blood of others, as within these Orders
could be both monks and knights at the same time.
For this reason, the monks then landed in France under the protection of Louis VII, having
been some of them even knights, then warrior monks, held the qualifications and
qualifications, together with their votes, to bring with them, even the transmission of chivalric
initiation, and it is this which, according to our oral tradition, would have come to the present
day. Other monks, some of whom from Calabria, who also came from the Abbey of "Our Lady
of Mount Sion", and who accompanied Godfrey of Bouillon to the Holy Land, returned
together to the Duke in France and installed themselves at the
Abbey of Orval.
IN: All this is very interesting and fascinating and really
explains many things, but there are still many other questions,
I must say, always historical and academic, for example,
because today, this Order, dissolved in 1600, then no more
under the aegis of the Roman Catholic Church is still called a Priory, which is essentially
commonly understood as an ecclesiastical authority while you, if I am not mistaken, no longer
refer to any church? And why in particular do you call yourself the Priory of Sion, if the
Priory of origin, before your clandestinity, was that of Saint-Samson?
GM: The question is very pertinent and not at all banal, to explain I will have to give a very
technical answer, that is, it should be clarified that the term Priorato incorporates the
governing bodies that govern the orders of chivalry, as well as the body responsible for the
