A HISTORY OF SIAM
          54
                                          The of Lan-
independent States, namely : (i) Kingdom
          nat'ai, comprising Chiengmai, Nak'onLamp'ang,Lamp'un,
Chiengrai, Chiengsen, and the present State of Kengtung
(then called K'emarat) ; and (2) the small but redoubtable
                      of
          Principality P'ayao.
A great many of the events of King Ramk'amheng's
               are known to from from
          reign us, partly Burmese, partly
Chinese sources, and partly from stone inscriptions which
          have been discovered.
            The circumstances under which
                                            King Ramk'amheng
acquired ascendancy in Pegu are very interesting.
The Burmese Governor of Martaban, Alienma,

having disobeyed the orders of the King of Burma,
Tarekpyemin, was turned out by the Burmese. He
escaped to Siam and took an oath of fealty to King
Ramk'amheng, who thereupon restored him to power
at Martaban. The Burmese Government was at
that time so that no interference was
                        disorganised
                     For some time a Shan
         attempted. previous to this,
         adventurer named had been at
                             Mogado residing
where he became a favourite with
         Suk'ot'ai, great
the Siamese to whom he a white
                       King, presented
elephant which had come into his possession. This,
be it is the first Siamese white of
                said,
                                                    elephant
         which makes mention.
                history
           While was absent on a
                  King Ramk'amheng campaign
against Cambodia, Mogado eloped with one of his
                    and to
daughters, escaped Martaban, where he was well
resided there as a trader. He
         known, having previously
         rebelled
against Aleinma, murdered him, and made
himself Governor of Martaban. He later with
                                                 quarrelled
the King of Pegu, defeated him, and made himself King.
         In order to his
strengthen position he submitted to his
         old to whom he swore
             patron, King Ramk'amheng,
