Tune Your
Guitar
Now that you have an overview of the string names you can begin an exercise that you will repeat
many times in your playing career; tuning your guitar. Later on in the book you will learn some
alternate methods of tuning your guitar, but for now we will focus on electronic tuning methods.
Handheld Electronic Tuners and Apps
There are a variety of electronic tuners on the market. They will generally fall into one of
two categories: standard tuners and chromatic tuners. Standard tuners are the most basic of the
two and are capable of recognizing the standard tuning tones (E, A, D, G, B and E). Many have
lights that will turn green when the correct tone is reached.
Chromatic tuners are capable of recognizing
a larger variety of tones than standard tuners. These
tuners can also be a little easier to read as they show a
visual representation of the guitars tone. Both types of
tuners come in a variety of types and can be found in
most stores that sell guitar equipment.
The guitar world has benefited from the mas-
sive technological advances of our day. If you own a
smart phone there are many apps that can be down-
loaded that will aid you in tuning your guitar. This
book does not endorse any particular app, but a curso-
ry reading of reviews before downloading should allow
you to pick the best one for your application.
