BENEFIT OF ENGINEERING

                              STANDARDS

                                                         VP, NCB Kuwait

Engineering Standards are documents that describe the important fea-
tures of a product, service or system. There are thousand of Eng. Stand-
ards in use around the world. They cover everything from the simplest
screw thread to the most complex information technology network.

I have been working in this Technical information services industry for
over 25 years providing Engineering Codes & Eng. Standards for the
Oil&Gas, Petrochemicals, Construction, Academics, Utilities, Security &
       Defense industry in Kuwait.

By applying Engineering Eng. Standards from Design stages itself, Organi-
zations can help to ensure that their products and services are consistent,

compatible, safe and effective. Today, products are assembled from com-
ponents made in different countries, and are then sold around the world,
so Eng. Standards are more important than ever. Standards affect nearly
every product or service we encounter in our daily lives. Just imagine
how difficult and dangerous it could be to change a light bulb if there
were not Eng. Standards concerning electric safety, voltage, and light
       bulb sizes.

Two of the most important international agencies for standardization are
the ISO & IEC. ISO and IEC Standards are often adopted by countries as
voluntary Eng. Standards, or included in national rules and regulations.
Eng. Standards prepared by some American associations are used as in-
ternational Eng. Standards like, American Society for Testing and Materi-
als (ASTM), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and the
Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), American Petroleum Institute
(API), British Standards (BSI) & many more. There are over 200 Standard
       Developing Organizations worldwide.

The benefits of referring to Engineering Eng. Standards at a glance are:

Engineering Standards as a catalyst for innovation

Standards can serve as a catalyst for innovations and help in anchoring
solutions more quickly on the market. Incorporating innovative aspects
into Eng. Standards can prove crucial for market success since the market
is then best prepared for the product.
