This 9 step process was pioneered by and is unique to Essilor and is crucial to
providing the most durable, cleanable, glare-free lenses.
Step STRIPPING The first step involves stripping existing factory hard coats. To have consistently durable lenses, you need a
1 consistently durable hard coat on both the front and back of the lens.
The hard coating applied to all Crizal no-glare lenses is a polymer matrix and silica (glass like particles) mix.
Step HARD COATING This coating is then thermally bonded onto the lens. Once the coating has been baked onto the lens, it
2
never comes off.
Step CLEANING The freshly coated lens is now cleaned using an ion gun in the vacuum coating machine. This increases
3 adherence of the anti-reflective layers to the hard coated surface.
Step SR BOOSTER™ A thick layer of quartz is deposited on the lens, which boosts scratch resistance even further.
4 LAYER
ANTI- Several layers of metallic oxides are deposited on the lens to reduce reflections through a process called
Step REFLECTION “destructive interference” (the layers cause reflections to cancel each other out, resulting in greater light
5
LAYERS transmission and clarity).
By including an electrically conductive layer in the lens, static does not build up when the lens is cleaned.
Step ANTI-STATIC The static that builds up on other lenses causes dust and other particles to “cling” to the lenses- making
6 LAYER them harder to keep clean. Crizal Avance UV, Crizal Sapphire UV and Crizal Prevencia no-glare lenses do not
build up static- making them easier to keep clean.
A hydrophobic (“non-stick”) layer is applied to the lens, which prevents body oils, sweat and other dirt from
HIGH SURFACE
Step DENSITY™ (HSD) sticking to the lens (and making any substance that does manage to get on the lens very easy to remove).
7 Crizal no-glare lenses have a higher density of the non-stick material than competitive lenses, making them
LAYER
easier to clean. HSD is applied to Crizal Alize UV, Crizal Avance UV, Crizal Sapphire UV and Crizal Prevencia.
The reason Crizal no-glare lenses can be so hydrophobic (non-stick) is due to a patented temporary layer
which allows the lens to be edged. Lenses are held in the edger with sticky pads, and- without the Pad
Step PAD CONTROL Control Layer- the pads would not stick to a Crizal no-glare lens (that’s how we demonstrate the anti-stick
8 LAYER™ properties of these lenses - in fact, try picking up the lens with a Post-it note… you can’t ). The Pad
Control Layer allows Essilor to put more of the anti-stick substance on the lens surface compared to
competitive lenses, making Crizal no-glare lenses the easiest to clean.
The final step in the Crizal 9-step process is systematic quality control. Crizal no-glare lenses must pass
Step QUALITY rigorous durability tests, cosmetic and optical inspection before being shipped to the customer.
9 CONTROL Additionally, batch testing of lenses ensures all Crizal Coating Centers are producing consistently high
quality Crizal lenses.
