Now to conclude this essay with the subject that we began.
Each day we recite (Devarim 11:18) “And you shall place these .
words of Mine on your hearts and on your soul,” which is an
affirmation of the acceptance of mitzvot, as Chazal have taught י
(Gemara Berachot 2a), and this affirmation is inclusive of all
mitzvot, whether they involve one’s actions or one’s speech or
one’s thoughts. This concept is taught in perashat Nitzavim
(Devarim 30:14) “Because this matter (this Torah) is very close
to you, in your mouth and in your heart (i.e., in your mind) to :רֵמוֹא ,רֶתֵסַּבּ הָשִּׁא םָדָא ףַאָנ ?
perform them.” Yet one who is accustomed to speak and think
about anything at all that comes to mind (without any restraints
or discipline) will rationalize to himself that this “acceptance” ,ףֵאוֹנַּה תרַוּצְבּ דָלָוַּה תרַוּצ רַצ ?
goes only as far as doing what Hashem Yitbarach commanded us .
and not to do anything that the Torah forbids. But restraining

his words and thoughts (and exercising discipline over what he שׁוֹדָקַּה ,םֵסרְַפְּתִיֶּשׁ הֶצוֹר וֹניֵאֶשׁ ףַא ,רֶתֵסַּבּ הרָוֹתּ דַמָל
would say) was never even a thought in his mind at all. But
truthfully that is not so because “acceptance” is inclusive of all
of the mitzvot of the Torah.
Therefore one must be very careful when reciting this part of the

22. Meaning, he assumes that “acceptance” only applies to actions and not to
thoughts or speech.
