                                                                                                                             Orlando Barría Lecture

                                                                                                                                On Friday, June 12, an online lecture was held by Chilean photographer Orlando Barría,
    Exhibition Centres                                                                                                      photojournalist and documentary filmmaker, and correspondent for the EFE News Agency in the                     Exhibition Centres

                                                                                                                            Dominican Republic. The lecture was titled “Documenting the Crisis: The Duty to Look”.
                                                                                                                                Orlando Barría is a photojournalist born in Chilean Patagonia. He studied professional
                                                                                                                            photography in Santiago, Chile, and worked as a photo reporter for the newspapers La Época and
                                                                                                                            El Mercurio. Since 2002, he has been working as a correspondent for the EFE News Agency in the
                                                                                                                            Dominican Republic.

                                                                                                                                Barría has covered a wide range of events, including the war in Ukraine, the Rio de Janeiro
                                                                                                                            Olympic Games, and the Pan American Games in Lima, Rio, Toronto, and Santo Domingo. He has also
                                                                                                                            reported on papal visits to Cuba and Colombia, hurricanes in the Caribbean, humanitarian crises, the
                                                                                                                            funeral of Fidel Castro, the 2010 and 2021 earthquakes in Haiti, the 2004 armed conflict in Haiti, the
                                                                                                                            social unrest in Chile, presidential summits, President Obama’s visit to Cuba, the assassination of the
                                                                                                                            Haitian president and Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica, among many other events.

                                                                                                                                In the audiovisual field, Barría is co-director of the documentary “The Photographer of La 40”
                                                                                                                            and is currently working on his second documentary film, Cannon Fodder (Carne de Cañón).
                                                                                                                                He has held numerous exhibitions and received several awards, including first prizes at POY
                                                                                                                            Latam (USA), the Luis Valtueña Award (Spain), the PX3 Prix de la Photographie Paris (France), the
                                                                                                                            Photojournalism Salon (Chile), the Santo Domingo Visual Arts Biennial, and the AMI Information
                                                                                                                            Media Association Award (Spain). In 2022, he was nominated for the Gabriel García Márquez Award.
