and across all divisions. It is essential that we prioritize our programs in order to increase the
efficient use of our limited resources and to grow new sources of revenue. This prioritization
process creates a dynamic roadmap for investment and reallocation.
Several opportunities present themselves in order to better align each program for investment,
opportunity, transformation and further review. In some instances, program prioritization
leads the university to consider reorganization of its colleges as an example of better
alignment. Other notable strategies for consideration could include:
• Creating a School of Engineering may provide the resources and visibility needed to
strengthen these programs. The engineering programs are of high quality and high
marketability with low graduates.
• Reviewing the placement of the nursing program. The nursing program has strength
however it is integrated into the School of Nursing and Allied Health.
• Considering separating education programs into its own college as it currently resides
in the College of Interdisciplinary Studies and Humanities.
• Nine of the programs require further review as they represent 6% of the average
number of graduates over a five-year period.
• Implementing a hybrid budget process to begin reallocating resources – allowing
resources to impact strategic priorities.
• Developing a measurement system to track strategies and activities to the outcomes.
• Developing a communication plan for program prioritization that informs
stakeholders of progression.
• Requiring new programs to have a P&L for three years for investment purposes.
• Aligning administrative infrastructure changes with changes in Academic
prioritization changes.
Other noteworthy activities:
• Many units have built strategic plans for their respective units. We should monitor
such activities for success.
• With few resources, the university has continued to provide higher quality education
that has been sanctioned by SACS accreditation.
• Due to the State of Louisiana’s economy in the last several years, the university has
been able to make hard decisions that has protected the academic core.
• The University hired the Gallup Company to provide analyses, demonstrating its
desire to continue to focus on the strategic goals of the university to ensure mission,
market and margins are met.
