Special Consideration

Keep/order extra sterile tracheostomy kit in the patient’s
home in case of accidental expulsion or blockage

Ensure that all individuals living in the home are aware of
the location of the extra Tracheostomy Kit

Tracheostomy Changes

 Secure tube to prevent accidental decannulation
 It is safe to change tube day 5-7 post-op
 Surgeon will perform the first tracheostomy change
 Before discharge, patient/family should be taught to
change the tracheostomy tube
 Monthly changes may reduce the risk of biofilm infections
 Apply a thin film of water- soluble lubricant to the surface
of the outer cannula and the tip of obturator
