Cleaning the Inner Cannula:

• Put on clean gloves
• Unlock inner cannula by turning 90 degrees counter-clockwise
• Remove cannula, while holding down the tracheostomy plate
• Place inner cannula in hydrogen peroxide
• Use nylon brush or pipe cleaners to scrub inside of cannula until
clean
• Rinse cannula in normal saline
• Shake off excess solution
• Re-insert clean inner cannula in tracheostomy outer cannula
• Lock by turning clockwise 90 degrees

Cleaning The Peristomal Skin:

 Remove old tracheostomy dressing and discard
 Remove contaminated gloves and cleanse hands.
 Don new gloves

 Gently lift plate from side to side to clean peristomal skin
