Suctioning
Coughing is superior to suctioning in removing excessive
secretions.
• Encourage the patient to cough to clear secretions
• Only suction, when needed, pass catheter max 2-3
times
• Avoid unnecessary suctioning as the tracheal mucosa
may become irritated and infection may be introduced

Suctioning
Indications that the patient requires suctioning include:
Noisy, moist respirations
Increased pulse
Increased respirations
Non-productive coughing
More frequent or congested sounding cough
Visible secretions
Increased shortness of breath
