PROCEDURE PREPARATION

Review information sheet from manufacturer of
tracheostomy tube, if possible.

 Adhere to Standard Precautions, including goggles/face
shield.

 Explain procedure to patient
 Suction as needed prior to dressing change
 Verify physician's order for suctioning.
 Adhere to Standard Precautions, including goggles/face
shield.
 Explain procedure to patient.

Procedure Preparation- Equipment

 Gloves
 Goggles/face shield
 Suction machine

 Suction catheter, ½ diameter of tube, usually 12 Fr.
 Distilled water
 Clean solution container
 Impervious trash bag

Suction Machine

 Prepare suction machine according to
manufacturer’s instruction.

 Set suction pressure between 80-120 mm Hg.
