Suctioning

 Stop advancing catheter if resistance is met and withdraw
catheter about ½ inch

To avoid damage to the airways and hypoxia:

 Suction should be set at <120 mmHg
 Suction should be applied intermittently for periods no
greater than 10 – 15 seconds
 Only pass catheter 2 to 3 times
 Allow patient to re-oxygenate between passes
