Soon they began to build boats and
learned to sail. Their numbers grew and a
civilization was established in 3,000 B.C.
Around 3,100 B.C., a commanding king
called Menes, established a unified
kingdom of Egypt, ruled by powerful kings,
who later became known as pharaohs and
built temples, monuments and pyramids.
Even before the time of the pharaohs, the
area around both the White and Blue Nile
tributaries suffered from heavy rains each
year.
This caused large amounts of rain water to
raise the water level in the Nile River and
flood over before it reached the
Mediterranean Sea.
